Welcoming a new baby is a beautiful change for the whole family, and the relationship between your children is one of the most meaningful parts of your newborn story.

But if you have a toddler who rarely sits still or an older child who feels shy in front of the camera you may be wondering whether newborn photos with siblings will actually work.

The answer is yes. The secret is not expecting children to behave like tiny adults. I keep sibling newborn photography relaxed, safe and flexible, working with each child’s age and personality rather than forcing a pose that does not feel natural.

At my Varsity Lakes studio, parents, siblings and even grandparents are welcome to be part of the newborn experience. We allow plenty of time, follow your baby’s needs and give older children space to settle in.

What If My Toddler Will Not Sit Still?

Toddlers are curious, energetic and wonderfully unpredictable. They may be excited about the studio, unsure about their new sibling or simply more interested in exploring than having a photograph taken. All of that is completely normal.

I never expect a toddler to sit perfectly and smile on command. Instead, I use simple prompts, play and connection to invite them into the moment. Depending on their age and confidence, we might ask them to:

  • Lie beside their new baby
  • Gently look at or talk to the baby
  • Give the baby a soft kiss
  • Hold a parent’s hand near the baby
  • Cuddle with the family
  • Help with a simple little job

Sometimes the loveliest image is not everyone looking at the camera. It may be your toddler peeking at their new sibling, a quiet kiss on the baby’s head or a family cuddle that shows exactly what this stage feels like.

Throughout the session:

  • Your newborn is carefully positioned and supported
  • An adult remains close whenever needed
  • Children are guided to use gentle hands
  • We choose age-appropriate setups
  • No child is forced into a pose they cannot manage safely
  • We stop and change direction if anyone becomes unsettled

Creating a beautiful photograph is never more important than protecting your children. If a particular idea is not safe or suitable on the day, I will adapt it and create something that is.

Safety Always Comes First

Newborn and sibling safety is the most important part of every session. Young children are never expected to hold or support a newborn without close adult assistance.

The way I photograph siblings together depends on the older child’s age, coordination and ability to follow directions. A school-aged child may be able to safely hold the baby while seated and carefully positioned. For a toddler, a supported pose with the baby securely placed beside them is often a better choice.

How We Keep Sibling Newborn Photography Relaxed

Children usually respond best when the experience feels low-pressure. Rather than repeatedly asking them to sit still or smile, we give them a chance to become comfortable and work in short bursts.

I keep directions simple and positive, and I move quickly when a child is engaged. If they need a break, a snack, a cuddle or time with a parent, we pause. There is no need to apologise if your toddler changes their mind or needs a moment the session is designed for real family life.

Parents can help by keeping expectations gentle. Children often relax more easily when they do not feel that getting the photograph right is their responsibility. My job is to guide the session, notice those small windows of connection and capture them when they happen.

Can We Photograph the Sibling Images First?

Where possible, sibling and family photographs can be taken early in the session, while older children are still fresh and interested.

Once their part is finished, some families arrange for one parent or another trusted adult to take the older children home, to a nearby park or out for a little activity. This can make the remaining newborn portraits calmer for everyone particularly during a longer session.

Other children are happy to stay for the full experience. We can plan what is most practical for your family during your pre-session consultation.

What About Older Brothers and Sisters?

Older children are often excited to be involved and may be able to follow more detailed instructions. Even so, they can feel nervous, self-conscious or uncertain about holding such a tiny baby.

I explain everything clearly and never pressure them to do something that makes them uncomfortable. We can photograph them seated with the baby, lying safely beside the baby or connecting through a simple touch or cuddle.

Their individual personality matters too. Some children love looking at the camera, while others create more meaningful photographs when they are focused on their new sibling. Both are beautiful.

What If My Child Does Not Want to Hold the Baby?

That is absolutely okay. A sibling photograph does not have to involve holding the newborn.

We can create connection in other ways, such as having your child sit close beside a parent holding the baby, touch the baby’s toes, gently hold their hand or join in a relaxed family portrait.

Children are experiencing a major change when a new baby arrives. Respecting their boundaries helps keep the session positive and can lead to far more natural photographs than trying to force interaction.

Preparing Your Child for Newborn Photos With Siblings

A little preparation can help your child feel confident without making the session seem like a performance.

It can also help to choose comfortable clothing that allows them to move freely. Soft, neutral colours usually photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on your children and their connection. I can guide you with outfits for the whole family before your session.

Before the day, you can:

  • Tell them they are coming to meet Clare and take some special family photographs
  • Explain that I will show them exactly what to do
  • Keep the conversation positive and relaxed
  • Bring a favourite quiet toy, snack and drink
  • Avoid practising smiles or putting pressure on them to behave perfectly
  • Let me know about any sensitivities, fears or additional needs beforehand

Will We Also Have Individual Newborn Photographs?

Yes. Your session can include a beautiful variety of images: your newborn alone, the baby with their siblings, parent photographs and portraits of the whole family.

The exact flow is guided by your baby and your older children on the day. Feeding, changing and settling breaks are always welcome, and there is plenty of time to move between family combinations without rushing.

After the session, I will help you select the images you love and explore ways to enjoy them in your home, including albums, framed artwork and other keepsakes. Sibling images are especially meaningful in an album because they preserve the very beginning of a relationship that will grow and change for years.

Capturing the Beginning of Their Story

Your children do not need to sit perfectly, smile on command or act a certain way to create meaningful sibling photographs. They only need to be themselves.

Whether your toddler offers one quick kiss, your older child proudly holds the baby or everyone simply curls together for a family cuddle, those moments tell the honest story of your growing family.
